I first starting looking at Freemasonry when I was very young, I always associated Black Suits, Briefcases and older men with Freemasonry. I can now say this assumption is somewhat limited.
I spent many evenings researching Freemasonry and I found several websites that told me I had to be 21, so left it until I turned 18. When I started at ICT in Education at Sunderland University I thought I would start researching it again in preparation. I still thought that to join a lodge I had to be 21. That was until I read about the United Grand Lodge of England's Universities Scheme at Oxford.
I then thought I would make enquiries to find out if Sunderland University had a Lodge attached it under the scheme and subsequently stumbled across this website. Shortly after contemplating it and after some further research I emailed secretary@mowbraylodge.org and my application process began.
I received many emails from members that gave me guidance on what would happen, firstly they requested that they met my family to ensure that they were supportive of my decision. Once this had been done and I had filled in the necessary forms, a date was set for my initiation.
Mowbray Lodge are so welcoming and even if you are not absolutely sure you want to join this great lodge and prestigious ancient fraternity, you should email the secretary and make enquiries, even if its just to find out a little more or to have your questions answered.
I heard all kinds of stories about Freemasonry, but i've found it personally rewarding and socially very enjoyable. It is great to be able to sit and have good conversation with men from all walks of life that isn't influenced by Religion or Politics.
This Universities Scheme has given me to the opportunity to join Freemasonry and I feel it was the best decision I made!
